Setting Your Priorities Straight

There are many people today that wander aimlessly through life, not having any real purpose or goal and not really knowing why they are here on earth. There are other people who are in deep emotional, psychological or physical pain and seek the truth but never seem to find it because they seek the truth in the wrong places. Then there are still other people who are religious but still do not have a clear understanding of what their purpose in life should be.

Do you find yourself in any of these categories?  If you do, I have good news for you today.  By the end of this article you will have a clear understanding of why you were created on this earth and what your main purpose in life should be.

Before we begin, let us lay the ground work.  If you have any doubts that God exists, or that Jesus is the Son of God or that the Bible is God’s word, I suggest you read my posts Does God Exist? Is Jesus Christ the Son of God?Is the Bible the Word of God?

To begin, let us answer the question ‘What is my main purpose in life?’  Here is the answer:

Your TOP priority in life should be to LOVE and SERVE GOD.

Why? you may ask.

The answer is simply because God is the One Who determines your ETERNAL fate!
Your life span on earth is but an infinitesimal drop in the ocean of eternity, so how you spend your eternity should be your FIRST priority.  Since God is the One who determines how you will spend eternity, it is of the highest intelligence and wisdom to pay careful attention to His commandments.

God has all authority over heaven and the earth and the inhabitants therein, as it is written in Matthew 28:18…

Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me.”

Many people do not like the word authority today because in their minds authority equates with some form of oppression; however once we understand God’s character, we will not only desire His authority but actively seek His approval!

From the Bible we know that:
1. God is GOOD.
2. His Mercy is Everlasting.
3. His Truth endures for all generations.

As it is written in Psalm 100:5…

For the LORD is good; His mercy is everlasting; and His truth endureth to all generations.

These are the three foundational reasons why we should love, worship and serve the Living God.

We may have experienced good will from other people in our lives, but God’s goodness is boundless!
In addition to His goodness, God is also extremely gentle!

Listen to how gentle and kind God is, as we read in Matthew 11:28-30…

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”

Who would not want to be under the shelter and protection of such a Good and Gentle God?

God demonstrated His unlimited goodness by sending His Son, Jesus Christ, to die on the cross for sinful mankind, as we read in Romans 5:6-8…

You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous person, though for a good person someone might possibly dare to die. But God demonstrates His own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

God sent His One and Only Precious Son to us to teach us the truth and to pay the penalty for our sins, which is death. As it is written in Isaiah 53:5…

But He was pierced for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities;
the punishment that brought us peace was on Him, and by His wounds we are healed.

God gave to us what was MOST precious to Him: His Son!

God’s immeasurable love and goodness for us should stir in our hearts the deepest awe and respect and should kindle a deep desire to love and serve Him and yes be under His KINDLY authority!

On the other hand, God will not be mocked and God states clearly in the Bible that those who reject His unbounded love and goodness embodied in His Precious Son Jesus Christ will not escape eternal punishment.

The warning is clear as we read in Hebrews 10:26-31…

If we deliberately keep on sinning after we have received the knowledge of the truth, no sacrifice for sins is left, but only a fearful expectation of judgment and of raging fire that will consume the enemies of God. Anyone who rejected the law of Moses died without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses. How much more severely do you think someone deserves to be punished who has trampled the Son of God underfoot, who has treated as an unholy thing the blood of the covenant that sanctified them, and who has insulted the Spirit of grace? For we know Him Who said, “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,” and again, “The Lord will judge his people.” It is a dreadful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

And Jesus Christ said:

There is a judge for the one who rejects Me and does not accept My words; the very words I have spoken will condemn them at the last day.  (John 12:48)

Since God has all authority, Who can oppose Him or avoid His Judgment?!

For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive his due for the things done in the body, whether good or bad. (2 Corinthians 5:10)

This should stir in our hearts a godly fear and awe for God’s majesty and power.
Therefore, the most wise action for a human on earth is to pay careful attention to God’s words, obey them diligently and seek God’s favor to the best of their understanding and ability.

In order to show God we love Him, what should we do? The answer is right in the Bible:

This is love for God: to keep His commands. And His commands are not burdensome, for everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith. Who is it that overcomes the world? Only the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God. (1 John 5:3-5)

Have you ever been in love?
If you have, you can remember how the whole world revolved around your beloved and your life seemed magically joyful and exuberantly happy!  Well, that is the way God wants us to love Him!  Our life – our thoughts, emotions and actions – should revolve around Him!

God will not take second place. Listen to what He says in Matthew 10:37…

“Anyone who loves their father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me; anyone who loves their son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me.”

This means that your highest priority in the activities of each day should always be God! No, not husband or wife, not children, but God!  God is a jealous God as we read in Deuteronomy 4:24…

For the Lord your God is a consuming fire, a jealous God.

and in Deuteronomy 5:9…

You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation of those who hate Me.

Every morning we should give our first waking moments to Him: to thank Him for His goodness to us in all the blessings we have, to praise Him for His Greatness and to worship His Awesome Holiness!

During the day we should remember His goodness and we should imitate His goodness by being good to others.

Every evening before bed we again should give Him the glory and thank Him for the day that has passed and ask His forgiveness for any offences.

God seeks FERVENT lovers of His Goodness!

Listen to what God says in Revelation 3:16…

So, because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of My mouth.

After all, God gave us His most precious possession: His Son, so we in turn must give Him what is most precious to us: our life in loving obedience to Him!

God seeks worshippers who worship Him in spirit and in truth as it is written in John 4:24…

God is spirit, and His worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.

More detailed instructions on how to please God can be found here: Instructions From Eternity.

Now, let’s address the question ‘Why was I created on this earth?’

Here is the answer: To give God glory!

How do we give God the glory? you may ask.

We glorify God by living in loving obedience to His will as revealed to us in the Bible and personally through the Holy Spirit, Who God will give us if we simply ask!

Listen to what Jesus says…

“Which of you fathers, if your son asks for a fish, will give him a snake instead? Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!”     (Luke 11:11-13)

We live close to God when we feed our minds and hearts daily with His word, as we read in Psalm 119…

Thy word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.
I have hidden Thy word in my heart that I might not sin against Thee.

How wonderful is God! He gives us His word in the Bible and His Holy Spirit – He provides for all our needs!

God promises to heal us and to give us hope and a future, as it is written…

He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds. (Psalm 147:3)

The LORD is near to the brokenhearted; He saves the contrite in spirit. (Psalm 34:18)

For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” (Jeremiah 29:11)

So if you are seeking the truth, herein is the good news for you:

You were created for God’s glory and your top priority in life should be to love and serve God in His Goodness, Majesty and Holiness!
In return, God blesses you with joy, peace and a glorious future on earth and forever in eternity!

Praise the Living God forever and ever!  Amen.
